NFL WEEK 5 PICKS:
NEW YORK JETS (1-3) vs. ATLANTA FALCONS (1-3)
MONEYLINE: Falcons -148 ML, Jets +130 ML
SPREAD: Falcons -3
OVER/UNDER: 45 points
JETS-FAlCONS PUBLIC TRENDS
Falcons ML: 49% money, 56% bets
Falcons Spread: 59% money, 47% bets
Over: 62% money, 63% bets
Despite losing their first three games, we saw what a close-knit group this Jets’ squad is after they surprisingly upset the Titans. Tennessee was missing their top two receivers and that certainly played a factor in the Jets’ win.
Fast forward a week and once again the Jets are playing a team without their top two receivers. Calvin Ridley (personal reasons) and Russell Gage (injury) will both miss the game.
Zach Wilson finally started to look like the QB the Jets thought they were getting when they drafted him 2nd overall. He still leads the league in turnover-worthy plays (per PFF) and he and that offensive line struggle against good defenses, but the Falcons don’t have a good defense.
The NY Jets want to run the ball. Game scripts have not allowed for that. Their game in London should be close which should translate into lots of opportunities for their lead running back who happens to be rookie, Michael Carter.
The Pick: Jets +3.5 and Michael Carter OVER 11.5 rush attempts
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (3-1) vs. CLEVELAND BROWNS (3-1)
MONEYLINE: Chargers -136 ML, Browns 120 ML
SPREAD: Chargers -2.5
OVER/UNDER: 47 points
CHARGERS-BROWNS PUBLIC TRENDS:
Chargers ML: 64% money, 48% bets
Chargers Spread: 50% money, 36% bets
Over: 17% money, 52% bets
Cleveland is 3-1 on the season, but they aren’t in the conversation when discussing the top teams because of Baker Mayfield. Simply put, the former #1 overall pick has been abysmal on the season.
On the other side of the ball, Justin Herbert is getting all sorts of praise – deservedly so.
This is an opportunity to buy low/sell high. I don’t believe Mayfield is as bad as he’s played nor do I think Herbert is quite this good. (he is really good though)
The line is Chargers -2.5, so by teasing it, I can get Cleveland +8.5 which takes me through the all-important 3, 6 and 7 point barriers.
WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM (2-2) vs. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (2-2)
MONEYLINE: Saints -139 ML, Washington +123 ML
SPREAD: Saints -2.5
OVER/UNDER: 43.5 points
WASHINGTON-SAINTS PUBLIC TRENDS
Saints ML: 89% money, 55% bets
Saints Spread: 58% money, 63% bets
Over: 43% money, 79% bets
Jameis Winston’s inconsistencies and the Saints’ lack of weapons at receiver limit New Orleans’ ability to pull away from teams. Couple this with the inexplicable decision to not use Alvin Kamara as a pass-catcher out of the backfield and I wonder if New Orleans’ offense is explosive enough to be a favorite on the road against anything but the dregs of the league.
I’m a believer in Taylor Heinicke and while I do think Saints’ CB, Marshon Lattimore will be able to keep Washington WR Terry McLaurin from beating them, I think Heinicke has enough other weapons that they’ll be able to keep this game very close.
At home, I like the dog. I like them even more when I can tease them from +2.5 to +8.5
The Pick: TEASE Cleveland +8.5 AND Washington +8.5
