Suddenly, we have a series!

Jimmy Butler went “Full LeBron” on Sunday night, going for 40 points, 13 assists, and 11 boards as he put the Heat franchise and all of South Beach on his back and carried them to a 115-104 win over the Lakers in Game 3 of the 2020 NBA Finals.

He was caught on camera during the game yelling, “you’re in trouble!” at the Lakers late in the fourth quarter, after the game had more or less been decided. And both Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic appear to be inching closer to a return from injury.

This could get fun.

Now, having said all of that, I will be all over the Lakers (-7.5) regardless of whether or not Bam or Dragic play. We discussed this in the leadup to the series, but a torn plantar fascia is a painful injury to play through, especially for a point guard who has to cut and change directions quickly. Bam has a neck strain, and if it was too painful for him to suit up in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, is he really going to be back to 100% just 48 hours later?

To be clear, I want them to play and I want them to be awesome because I do not want the NBA season to come to an end, but I just find it hard to believe that they’ll come back into the lineup and be the players they were during the Boston series.

But even with a healthy Dragic and a healthy Bam, remember: The Lakers were up by as many as 32 points in Game 1. When they play their best, they are unquestionably the better team. The talent is not really all that close, and you don’t have to be an NBA savant to know that the Lakers, on Sunday night, did not play their best. Anthony Davis missed the only fourth-quarter shot that he took.

He was outscored by …*checks notes*  … something known as Kelly Olynyk on Sunday. LeBron had five points, two assists, and three turnovers in the fourth quarter and finished with as many turnovers as assists on the night. Overall, the Lakers were playing like a team that thought that the Heat would roll over and die down 2-1.

Jimmy Butler was never going to roll over and die.

That was the wake-up call. Butler’s “you’re in trouble” was the motivator. I’ll be on Los Angeles in Game 4.
