Both of these sides desperately need a win at this point. We are sitting here in Matchweek 3 of the Champions League group stage and Madrid and Inter are currently sitting at the bottom of Group B. Inter has drawn with both Shaktar Donetsk and Borussia Monchengladbach while Los Blancos drew with the German side and lost to Donetsk.

And to be frank, I think the problems facing Inter are easier to solve that what is happening at the Bernabeu. 

Madrid whipped up on Barca in El Clasico a couple of weeks back, but even with Eden Hazard set to return to the lineup, this is team is not playing like the Real Madrid that we have become accustomed to seeing. Inter, on the other hand, have had impressive underlying numbers despite the fact that the results have not been ideal. Their 2-2 draw with Gladbach was the result of a pair of errors by Arturo Vidal that led to goals. In a scoreless draw with Shaktar, they hit the post and the crossbar and let’s just say the xG favored them a little bit:

Even the draw with Parma over the weekend saw Inter “win” on xG 2.5-0.7.

I do think that Madrid should be favored, but this feels like a buy-low spot for Inter where there is value on their number. I like the value on both the Moneyline and betting on a draw, but I think the better bet may be taking Inter (+0.5) at (+104).

There is something very important to consider here before we discuss the actual match itself: Liverpool play Manchester City in the premier league this week. City is their strongest title challenger, and this match is the kind of six-pointer that can swing a title race early in the season. Given that the Reds won their first two Champions League matches, it does seems like the savvy move here would be to rotate, giving some bigger names a rest on the road when Atalanta will be coming back to Anfield next week.

That context matters.

Because Liverpool’s already dealing with some very real injury issues. The results have been favorable, but the performances have not been anywhere near what they were last season. Part of that is a central defense that has been eviscerated by injury. Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho are not expected to play. Their attack, however, is as lethal as ever, as Diogo Jota has provided Liverpool with a fourth weapon in addition to Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.

And here’s the thing about this match: Atalanta love to press, they score a ton of goals and they are currently sitting fourth in Serie A despite the fact that they have allowed 13 goals this seaso. They are coming off of a run to the Champions League quarterfinal where it took two goals in the final five minutes for PSG to send them packing. 

A talented attacking side that cannot defend going up against a team with the best front three in the world and a central defense that is starting random academy products?

The over here is tasty.

And given what’s coming this weekend, the Atalanta side has some value as well.
