2020 US Open Betting Preview:
The 2020 US Open odds will be Dustin Johnson‘s to lose. The No. 1 player in the world is the 2020 US Open odds-on favorite (+750), having captured the Tour Championship and 2020 FedEx Cup championship in late August. While Johnson gets criticized for his struggles in major tournament play, Johnson has a 2006 US Open victory already in his bag. But the noise will always be there, but the 2020 stats don’t lie. With three PGA victories and two second-place finishes, there’s a reason why Johnson is the most popular pick to win by the total number of bets.
A rough Friday at the Tour Championship yanked Jon Rahm (+850) out of FedEx Cup contention, but the Spaniard still finished the event T4 and has three straight top 10 finishes. The key to Rahm playing in the final group on Sunday will be limiting a blowup round. Rahm’s late-season recovery was due in large part to steady four-day play. Rahm logged seven rounds of 70 or more in June and July, but just four since the beginning of August.
Justin Thomas (+1200) enters the event ranked No.2 in the world and catching the third shortest odds to win the event. Thomas is also the fourth most popular golfer by total betting volume. Thomas has three wins this season and ten top 10 finishes, not to mention a second-place finish at the Tour Championship.
When in doubt, bet on Collin Morikawa (+1600), right? The 23-year-old enters his second US Open with a major already in his bag, having won the 2020 PGA Championship. He also has a victory at the Workday Charity Open and five other top-ten finishes. We will know very early on if Morikawa is in contention. In all seven of his top-ten finishes this, he’s entered cut day already inside the top 10.
Phil Mickelson (+9000) isn’t expected to contend for the championship, but that won’t stop bettors from laying down big action on “Leftie,” who finished T2 the last time Winged Foot hosted the US Open in 2006. Mickelson is responsible for the third-most total weekend bets and the second most outright winning money of any player in the 2020 US Open field.
A victory for Mickelson this weekend would be the talk of the sports world, as the US Open is the only major Mickelson has yet to win, having been the runner up six times.
