NHL Tuesday Picks: Tuck’s Take for February 23

BLACKHAWKS (9-6-4, 22 pts) at BLUE JACKETS (8-7-4, 20 pts), 7 p.m. ET
STARTING GOALIES: Joonas Korpisalo (CBJ), Kevin Lankinen (CHI)
MONEYLINE: Blue Jackets -117, Blackhawks +100
PUCK LINE: Blue Jackets -1 (+148), Blackhawks +1 (-177)
OVER/UNDER: 5.5 goals (-104/-115)

Chicago travels to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets. Rookie netminder, Kevin Lankinen has been a revelation in net for the Blackhawks, and Columbus is looking more and more like the decimated team we thought they’d be back in 2019 when they lost all their prized free agents. This game should be Blackhawks -112 and instead, we get Blackhawks +107.

That’s too much value to pass up. The Pick: Blackhawks +107 ML.

SABRES (5-8-2, 12 pts) at DEVILS (6-5-2, 14 pts), 7 p.m. ET
STARTING GOALIES: Mackenzie Blackwood (NJ), Carter Hutton (BUF)
MONEYLINE: Devils -150, Sabres +128
PUCK LINE: Devils -1 (+118), Sabres +1 (-139)
OVER/UNDER: 5.5 goals (-104/-115)

New Jersey is a much-improved team and goaltender, Mackenzie Blackwood is sporting a .938 save %

Buffalo played a tough game vs the Islanders last night and have backup goaltender, Carter Hutton in net (.898 save %)

I’d prefer this line at -125 or so, which is where it was earlier in the day, but even at Devils -135, there’s value. The Pick: Devils -135 ML.

PENGUINS (9-6-1, 19 pts) at CAPITALS (9-5-3, 21 pts), 7 p.m. ET
STARTING GOALIES: Tristan Jarry (PIT), Vitek Vanecek (WAS)
MONEYLINE: Penguins -108, Capitals -108
PUCK LINE: Penguins +1 (-200), Capitals -1 (+163)
OVER/UNDER: 6.5 goals (-104/-115)

Both teams have issues in goal. In Washington, their starter (Ilya Samsonov) has been out for what seems like months and their off-season veteran signing, Henrik Lundqvist, had to retire early due to health issues.

Enter stage left, Vítek Vaněček. He’s been better than most people expected (2.92 GAA .907 save %) but ideally, he shouldn’t be starting every game.

In Pittsburgh, they gave the reigns to Tristan Jarry who, to be kind, has been less than stellar this season. But, here’s the thing. After starting the season off in horrific fashion, Jarry has turned it around. In his last 4 games, he’s allowed 9 goals and he’s saving over 93% of the shots he’s facing. While it is a small sample size, I think he’s closer to the goalie we’ve seen the last ten days than the goalie we saw for the first month.

Pittsburgh is a flawed team and I don’t think they have the pieces in place to make a deep run in the playoffs, but I give them the edge in goal and they’re playing pretty good hockey as of late. The Pick: Penguins -103 ML.
