NHL THURSDAY PICKS: TUCK’S TAKE

OILERS (8-7-0, 16pts) at CANADIENS (8-3-2, 18pts), 7 p.m. ET
Starting Goalies: Jake Allen (MTL), Mike Smith (EDM)
Moneyline: Canadiens -152, Oilers +130
Puck Line: Canadiens -1 (+106), Oilers +1 (-125)
Over/Under: 6.5 goals (-113/-106)

Montreal has the edge in goal and should win this game, but that’s not necessarily what we focus on when betting. How often will they win? If you consistently get +130 on teams that win 48% of the time, you’ll be doing quite well. Against a team that has two of the best players in the world, there’s no value in Montreal at -152 ML.  Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were both held off the scoresheet last game. What are the odds that it happens again?

This is a game where Montreal has the slight edge, but at +130, we like the value with Edmonton. The Pick: Oilers +130 ML.

PENGUINS (5-5-1, 11pts) at ISLANDERS (5-4-2, 12pts), 7 p.m. ET
Starting Goalies: Semyon Varlamov (NYI), Casey DeSmith (PIT)
Moneyline: Islanders -108, Penguins -107
Puck Line: Islanders -1 (+163), Penguins +1 (-200)
Over/Under: 5.5 goals (-104/-106)

Pittsburgh is not a good team. They haven’t been a good team for a couple of years. Yes, they still have Crosby, but their defense is a horror show and they have little depth at forward. I didn’t even mention their biggest issue currently which is goaltending. The Penguins might have the worst goaltending tandem in the league.

In the ultra-competitive Eastern Division, Pittsburgh is not going to make the playoffs.

As for the Islanders, they are well-coached and after a shaky start to their season, they are starting to round into form. That week off to practice and refocus was exactly what the doctor prescribed. Keep in mind, their “covid” break was as a result of other teams having covid outbreaks so the Islanders could still practice

They still have trouble scoring consistently and that issue isn’t going away. Their young heralded rookie goaltender, Ilya Sorokin, hasn’t played very well and I will avoid betting on the Islanders when he starts until I see him play better.

That said, Seymon Varlamov is in net tonight and our money is on the Isles. The Pick: Islanders -108 ML.

SENATORS (2-11-1, 5pts) at JETS (7-4-1, 15pts), 8 p.m. ET
Starting Goalies:
Connor Hellebuyck (WPG), Matt Murray (OTT)
Moneyline:
Jets -215, Senators +180
Puck Line:
Jets -1.5 (+112), Senators +1.5 (-134)
Over/Under:
6 goals (-122/+104)

I don’t expect the Senators to win this game, but anytime you see a line approach +200, you’ve got to look close.

Earlier in the season, Ottawa wasn’t getting good enough goaltending to compete. While that is certainly not a strength, it’s gotten a little bit better and the Senators have been playing smarter as of late. They beat Montreal and outshot Edmonton 42-22 before losing by one goal.

Despite a few prolific goal scorers, Winnipeg hasn’t been scoring a ton of goals lately. I expect this game to be of the 3-2 variety and in those close games, I’m almost always going to take the dog. The Pick(s): Ottawa +180 ML, Under 6 goals (+104).

The only other game I’m looking at is San Jose/Los Angeles. I’m waiting on the goalie confirmation. Martin Jones is in net for San Jose and while he is — at best —  mediocre, he’s still better than Devan Dubnyk. As for the Kings, I can’t bet on them if Jonathan Quick is in net. Simply put, at this point of his career, he’s bad. The Kings are one of those teams you can get decent value on when Cal Peterson is in net, but avoid at all costs when Quick is in.

Thursday NHL Odds: Tucks Take

  • Oilers +130 ML
  • Islanders -108 ML
  • Senators +180 ML
  • Senators-Jets Under 6 goals (+104)
