Longtime broadcaster and gambling expert David Tuchman breaks down the NFL Week 17 odds and has a lot of thoughts about the early slate of games.

Happy New Year everyone!

Let’s ring in 2021 by ringing the cash register!

If you read my blog or watched my video on Monday, you know we’ve hit on the first part of our two team teaser (Buffalo) and now we’re just waiting to see if the NY Giants +8.5 comes in.

A few opportunities always arise in week 17 because so few teams have anything to play for and depending on where their mindset is at, you can capitalize on their motivation or lack thereof.

NFL WEEK 17 ODDS: Early Games

FALCONS (4-11) at BUCCANEERS (10-5), 1 p.m.
MONEYLINE: Buccaneers -315, Falcons +260
SPREAD: Buccaneers -6.5
OVER/UNDER: 50.5 points

Atlanta hasn’t been playing for anything, but pride, for weeks and yet they are 5-3 ATS in their last eight games and they’ve covered the last two.

No reason to think that won’t continue this week vs a Buccaneers team that is merely playing for seeding. Now, there’s obviously a huge difference between the 6th seed and the 5th seed in the NFC, so I don’t want to suggest Tampa won’t be playing to win, but I do think there’s a difference when making the playoffs is on the line.

Atlanta is fresh off a game where they made Patrick Mahomes and the KC offense look pedestrian and they’re familiar with the Buccaneers having played them just a few days before Christmas. Keep in mind, that game (which was eventually won by Tampa 31-27), was 24-7 midway through the 3rd quarter. The Falcons know they can play with this Buccaneers team and they’ll be highly motivated to end the season well.

There’s not a ton of value to squeeze out of this orange, so make sure you get the touchdown. Anything less than Atlanta +7 just won’t do.

STEELERS (12-3) at BROWNS (10-5), 1 p.m.
MONEYLINE: Browns -400, Steelers +330
SPREAD: Browns -9.5
OVER/UNDER: 41.5 points

The Steelers-Browns Week 17 matchup is an interesting one to analyze simply because both teams actually have a lot to play for, yet, one team is treating it as if they’ve got nothing at stake. With head coach, Mike Tomlin announcing that Ben Roethlisberger is sitting this one out, it’s really hard to bet on the Steelers even at +9. But then, I remember that Cleveland couldn’t beat the Jets last week in a game they could ill-afford to lose. So, if the Browns couldn’t beat the Jets, can they beat Pittsburgh’s backups by 10?

So, you see my dilemma. I can’t in a good conscious bet on either team in this spot, although I’m definitely “leaning” toward the Steelers. Steelers are the play if you’re looking to bet, but I am avoiding this spot.

COWBOYS (6-9) at GIANTS (5-10), 1 p.m.
MONEYLINE: Cowboys -121, Giants +107
SPREAD: Cowboys -1.5
OVER/UNDER: 44.5 points

The line in the Cowboys-Giants Week 17 game has been moving toward Dallas. It opened at 2.5 which is where we teased the Giants, but at Dallas -1, they are where your money should be going if you’re betting.

Daniel Jones has admitted his hamstring is an issue. Couple that with a Giants team playing for nothing, and I am liking Dallas more and more. Andy Dalton has finally shaken the rust off and is playing surprisingly well.

Dallas -1 is the play.

VIKINGS (6-9) at LIONS (5-10), 1 p.m. ET
MONEYLINE: Vikings -205, Lions +180
SPREAD: Vikings -4.5
OVER/UNDER: 54 points

The Detroit Lions defense might have trouble stopping you, me, and nine of our friends. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but you get my point.

End of the season, with neither team playing for anything, expect both teams to try and pad the stat sheet.  I’m not anticipating an attention to detail when it comes to tackling. So while this game means absolutely nothing, I think it could be one of the more entertaining games of the week, IF you like offense.

The total is 53.5. We’re betting this one flies OVER!
