What a difference expectation makes.

The Czechs are the darling of the Euros to date. They opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Scotland, and followed that up with a 1-1 draw with Croatia, the reigning World Cup runner-ups. They’ve scored the goal of the tournament, they’re sitting at the top of their group and they’re doing it after getting 10-1 odds to win the Group heading into the event.

England, on the other hand, is level on points with the Czechs, sitting a goal back in GD and in a position where they are already through to the knockout rounds — they can finish no worse than third, and there are already two teams that finished third in their group on three points. They haven’t allowed a single goal in 180 minutes, but since their “juggernaut” attack has been held to just one goal in two matches, the world is officially coming to an end for the Three Lions.

The fact of the matter is this: Gareth Southgate has not figured out how to make this team function well. They have arguably the most exciting crop of attacking talent in the field — Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, are you freakin’ kidding me? — but Southgate’s tendency to try and play on the back foot has led to some uninspiring performances. They can’t break teams down in possession. They cannot find a way to get Harry Kane properly involved. It’s just not working.

So how to we handicap this matchup?

The Czechs win the group with a draw, so I fully expect them to do their best to park bodies behind the ball and dare an impotent England attack to them and break them down. They’ve allowed one goal in the tournament, and that came on a quick free-kick from Croatia that freed Ivan Perisic for a 1-v-1. So I do think that the under is in play here, although I expect that line to continue to trend down to the point that the value has been bled out of it.

Which means that I want to be on the side of the Czechs. I think there is value on any bet that you can make here, although I tend to lean towards Czech (+0.5) at (+163), which means the bet hits if there is a draw or if England loses. If you’re a little more risk-averse than that, I also think Czechs (+1) at (+110) is worth a look as well, as I think a 1-0 England win is pretty likely. If you’re looking to hit a home run, the Czechs draw no bet line is currently set at (+525), and that’s quite tasty.
