I think we all know what has happened to the Sixers in the last two games.
After taking control of the series by winning Games 2 and 3, Philly jumped out to an 18 point lead in Game 4, only to see it slip through their fingers in the second half, as Joel Embiid shot 0-for-12 from the field and the Hawks got hot at the right time.
Somehow, the same thing happened again in Game 5. The Sixers led by as many as 26 points. They led by 18 points heading into the fourth quarter. They somehow still managed to lose that game as well.
Now, I think that it’s pretty clear that Philly is the better team in this series. I also think that it is pretty clear that this is a roster that is devoid of confidence and that has not figured out how to function in the moments when defenses are going to ignore their non-shooters. The Hack-a-Ben strategy has worked to perfection as well.
And this is where it gets difficult.
Because we’re not betting here based on data, or numbers, or anything predictable.
We’re betting on whether or not the psyche of the Sixers is still intact, which is why I think the play here is to take the Sixers first half line and reevaluate. This team has been dominant when they don’t have to worry about Simmons getting sent to the line or trying to execute down the stretch. I don’t think too much will change in that regard tonight.
